Edwin J. and Ida M. Otken Memorial Garden
The Tribute Gardens are a series of 'outdoor rooms' that are available for a person, family or corporation to build in honor of someone they know or love. The gardens are arranged and connected much as rooms would be in a home. The style of each outdoor room reflects that of it's affiliated indoor room. There is a recreation room, parlor, dining room, library, pantry, kitchen, and... art room, along with a master bedroom and a bedroom suite! The recreation room, the Edwin J. and Ida M. Otken Memorial Garden, is now finished. Partially enclosed by a 'Victorian Style' fence, the recreation room features a mixed border of shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses, a large walk area, and a central grass circle that features two, over- sized, Adirondack chairs. The chairs not only add a sculptural quality, but are also a great prop for pictures and for pre-K and elementary school teachers to sit upon while reading a quick lesson! http://rutgersgardens.rutgers.edu/tribute.html(more)

College Hall in Summer
In 1912, Mabel Smith Douglass worked tirelessly to establish a liberal arts college for women in the state of New Jersey at a time when higher education opportunities for women were sparse. With assistance from the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs and government funds through Rutgers, the Carpender estate was purchased. This is the site of College Hall, the first college... building, and today, a central administrative building for Douglass. In September of 1918, the New Jersey College for Women opened its doors, and Mabel Smith Douglass, its first Dean welcomed a class of 54 women students into College Hall. Sixteen of these 54 students lived with their counselor on the third floor of College Hall, while the Dean and her two children resided on the second floor. The first floor was reserved for classrooms, administrative offices, and chapel.(more)

Mabel Smith Douglass Library
In its 78-year existence, the Mabel Smith Douglass Library's various buildings and services have reflected society's definition of the library's role in the educational community and the library's response as the role changed. Some of the changes reflect transformations, such as coeducation, access to education for more of the working class or the decline of smoking; but... predominately changes have been a response to the geometric growth of information technology and changes in teaching methodology. The library was founded in 1918 to serve Douglass College, then the New Jersey College for Women (N.J.C.). The firm Warner, Burns, Toan, Lunde designed the new library which was opened in 1961. Since 1971, the Douglass Library has had a series of women artists shows. To accommodate them the front lobby was designed to be used as an exhibition space. Further, local management philosophy had abandoned the theory that employees must be continually monitored. The centralization of library function, therefore, was no longer required which is reflected in the technical services department moving to the rear of the new wing. There were now 1025 seats and room for 215,000 volumes. The Mabel Smith Douglass Library also became the undergraduate library for Mason Gross School of the Arts after its creation in 1976 and in 1982 the Music Research Library for the University was moved from Alexander Library to the Ravine Room in the Douglass Library. That move required that 50,000 volumes from the Douglass Library collection be put into storage. In 1991 the library was given additional collection development roles: it now houses the primary collections for women studies, theater arts, dance, visual arts, speech and exercise science for the entire university.(more)
